An Kshatra

This thing just about ate up all of the free time I had left and I'm just glad it's finished. This is a (very, very) late contest entry to =KibaKazuki's contest, details which can be found here: [link]
Being as bad/unconfident as I am painting humans, I went for her second topic and drew one of her mythological creature characters, An Kshatra.

An Kshatra is a lion-like deity. The Gods merged her with parts of the sun in order to provide warmth and light to the world. To counterbalance the heat of the sun Lumen, the fox of the moon was created to be chased across the sky by the angry lion. His moon relieved the world of never-ending, scorching daylight and gave night to the world. Finally, the Gods created Kalen Ikenai to provide colour and life to the world and with those three deities in place the Gods were satisfied with their creation.

I really liked An Kshatra's unpredictable and volatile nature, so I decided to depict her. Initially, I wanted to paint a scene from a sidestory K2 had written telling about An Kshatra's betrayal and her attempt at overthrowing the Gods by crashing through the Golden Gates of Heaven and letting evil seep into Eden. I failed terribly at this, as well as generally depicting her like she should have been. See for yourself: [link] So, instead I repainted most parts of it and left it like this. I went a little overboard with the mane, because she IS supposed to be female, but right now I'm a little beyond caring and just happy I finished this!

To answer your question: just a lot of patience and through the use of a bazillion references. (You have no idea how crap this one looked halfway through the process XD)
